Home

In these days of the Great Deception, when people prefer a reassuring lie rather than the inconvenient truth, this is a collection of articles I have written about the truth found in God's Word, the need for biblical teaching, and sound doctrine.  It includes articles that refute false doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church, the Russian Orthodox Church, the prosperity movement, the eternal security doctrine, Islam, agnosticism, antinomianism, relativism, atheism, humanism, ecumenism, the New Age movement, the Jehovah's Witness, the Mormons, also known as the Latter Day Saints (LDS), as well as the oneness doctrine of Unitarians. This collection of articles also exposes certain other cults and movements based outside the USA. It even exposes the popular, international Hillsong church, as well as certain novels that are popular among Christians.

As the Scriptures say:

“Holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.”  (Tit 1:9)

"I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints." (Jud 1:3b)

“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” (2Ti 2:15)

"In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures." (Jas 1:18)

"Jesus *said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.'" (Joh 14:6)

It is my prayer that these articles will lead you to pray earnestly and seek the Lord's face, as well as search the Scriptures, regarding what you have been taught and have come to believe, so that you will not miss the glories of heaven and wind up in hell for eternity.  “And you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." (Joh 8:32)

The Heretical Hebrew Roots Movement

Dear saints,

I'd like to talk to you today about the Hebrew Roots Movement (HRM) that has become very popular around the world these days. This may sound like a good thing on the surface, for Christians to go back to our Hebrew roots, since Jesus was Hebrew, the entire New Testament was written by Jews, and the Church in the first century was comprised of Jewish believers in Jesus for the first ten years, until the Gentile household of Cornelius got saved (Ac 10).

However, the Hebrew Roots Movement is not a good thing. It's a heretical movement with the same roots as Church of God (Seventh Day), the heretical SDA Church, and the Millerites of the 1800's, as well as the Judaizers of the first century, whose false gospel the very first Church Council rejected in the first century, and which Paul always preached against.

This is connected in with lots of false teachings, including keeping Torah (i.e., following Jewish dietary laws, keeping the Jewish Sabbath on Saturdays, keeping the Jewish feasts, etc). That is going back to the law, following Jewish customs, which the cross set us free from, and if any Gentile does this, they have made the cross of no affect, alienated themselves from Christ, and fallen away from grace (Gal 5:4). The Word of God clearly says that all foods are clean (Mk 7:19; Ac 10:15; 11:9; Rom 14:20).

The people in the Hebrew Roots Movement believe that the reason the Father is angry with the lukewarm church and the reason it is lukewarm is that they are not properly keeping Torah and not keeping the Jewish Sabbath.

As I mentioned, the first Church Council convened in the first century to address the Judaizers' heresy and decided against it (Acts 15). The apostle Paul also soundly condemned it once and for all in his epistles under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Here are some examples of what he wrote:

"I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you, and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed." (Gal 1:6-9)

"But it was because of the false brethren who had sneaked in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to bring us into bondage. But we did not yield in subjection to them for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel might remain with you." (Gal 2:4-5)

"How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?" (Gal 2:14b)

"For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: 'Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.' Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because 'the righteous will live by faith.' The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, 'The person who does these things will live by them.'" (Gal 3:10-12; cf., Rom 10:5)

That means that if a Gentile wants to go back to observing the law and Jewish customs, they have to obey the whole law.

"You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?" (Gal 3:1-3)

"But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you." (Gal 4:9-11)

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth? That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. 'A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.' I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion, whoever that may be, will have to pay the penalty." (Gal 5:1-10)

"'Are you so dull?' [Jesus] asked. 'Don't you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? For it doesn't go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.' (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.)" (Mar 7:18-19)

"The voice spoke to him a second time, 'Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.'" (Act 10:15)

"Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble." (Rom 14:20)

"They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings—external regulations applying until the time of the new order." (Heb 9:10)

"For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision group. They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain." (Tit 1:10-11)

Hebrew Roots Movement vs. Messianic Jews
The Hebrew Roots Movement is not the same as the Messianic Jewish church. The Messianic Jews are actually Jewish people who have come to believe in Jesus their Messiah. They love the Jewish people and are winning them to the Lord. But the Hebrew Roots Movement is made up of Gentile believers adopting Jewish customs that were never meant for non-Jews. By doing the things they are doing, like processing the Torah in their services, or in one case wrapping a fallen minister in the Torah, they are alienating and offending Jews unnecessarily.

There is a Messianic Jewish man named Tov Rose, who wrote an article, in which he linked to the following paper that goes into the history of the Hebrew Roots movement.

I just read up to page 41 or so of this paper, and may finish it later. But page 33 is key. This is the history of the modern Hebrew Roots Movement, which has its roots in cults like the Worldwide Church of God led by heretic Herbert Armstrong. In other words, the Hebrew Roots Movement is essentially a new brand name for the Herbert Armstrong cult, known as Worldwide Church of God, which was closely related with the Millerites and the SDA. After Armstrong's death in 1996, the elders of the Worldwide Church of God repented and formed Grace Communion International (GCI), at which time they publicly confessed that they had been wrong to preach that message.

The Hebrew Roots Movement is synonymous with the Two House of Israel Movement and the One Law Theology, which states that "there is one law for both the native born and the sojourner" (Google AI). This is essentially replacement theology, which teaches that the Gentile Church is made up of the lost tribes of Israel and that it is Israel. It teaches that the Jews in Palestine are not Israel and not the true heirs of the land, but that we Gentile believers are.

Article (One Law Two Sticks)

Is HRM a Cult or Not?
I hold to the broad definition of a cult that I learned in Bible school in the late 1980's and early 1990's. A cult is any group claiming to be Christian that does not hold to the sound doctrines of the faith as taught in the Bible and upheld by the Church for centuries. The heretical Hebrew Roots Movement meets this criterion, and shares the same historical and doctrinal roots as other cults, as I have already discussed and proven from Scripture; therefore, it is a cult, in my opinion.

Closing Words
In conclusion, the Hebrew Roots movement is actually a false or heretical movement, not one that is true to God's Word. It preaches another gospel, which has already been condemned by Scripture. Beware of this false gospel! And if you have already been caught up in it, then repent and come out of it, so that you may be saved, since you are putting yourself under the law. Please share this with those whom you love that are caught up in this false movement. I hope they will prayerfully consider what I and Tov Rose have written, and be set free from their bondage in Jesus' mighty name.

Please do not attack me for sharing this information with you. As Paul wrote: "Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth? Those people are zealous to win you over, but for no good. What they want is to alienate you from us, so that you may have zeal for them." (Gal 4:16-17)

Do You Want to Know Him?
If you want to know Jesus personally, you can. It all begins when you repent and believe in Jesus.  Do you know what God's Word, the Bible says?

“Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.’” (Mar 1:14b-15).  He preached that we must repent and believe.

Please see my explanation of this in my post called "Do You Want to Know Jesus?"

Refuting the Oneness Christology Heresy

Oneness Christology or Modalism, also known as Modalistic Monarchianism, is a false Christian theology upholding the oneness of God as well as the divinity of Jesus. It contradicts the Scriptural doctrine of the Holy Trinity, also known as Trinitarianism1, which I have explained in my other article on this blog found at this link. Modalism teaches that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three different modes or manifestations of God. In the Western Church, this is called Sabellianism, and in the Eastern Church it is Patripassianism, which are both forms of theological modalism2. United Pentecostals hold to this age-old heresy, denying the Trinity. But the following Scriptures prove modalism false.

1.   "Then God (Elohim) said, “Let Us make mankind in Our image, in Our likeness," (Gen 1:6). Here it uses the Hebrew word “Elohim” for “God”, which is the plural (more than one) word for God. Elohim is like saying "Gods" because it is not singular.

Since the plural word for God (Elohim) is used in this verse and Elohim said, "Let Us (first person plural)" make man in "Our" (first person plural) image, and in "Our" (first person plural) likeness, why does Elohim refer to Himself in the first person plural as Us and Our?

2.   "I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain." I will proclaim the LORD's decree: He said to me, "You are my son; today I have become your Father. (Psa 2:6-7)

Why does Yehova God need to install His King on His holy mountain and declare the King to be His Son and Himself as the King’s Father, if there is no distinction between them at all?  How could this be possible if they are not distinct from one another?

3.   For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father"? Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son"? (Heb 1:5)

Why would the Son say to Himself, “I will be His Father” if He is the Father?

4.   “But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.” (Mat 10:33)

If Jesus is the Father, how will He disown anyone before His Father?

5.   Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." (Mat 26:39)

If Jesus is the Father, then why did He have to pray this way to the Father, asking for the Father’s will and not His will, since it makes their wills distinct from each other?

6.   Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” (Mat 28:18)

How can the Father give all authority to Jesus unless the Son is another One?

7.   “About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?’ (which means ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’).” (Mat 27:46)

How could Jesus ask why God had forsaken Him if they are exactly the same Person?

8.   "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Mar 13:32)

How can only the Father know something and not the Son unless they are two distinct Persons?

9.   Then I said, 'Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll— I have come to do your will, my God.'" (Heb 10:7)

If Jesus is the Father, why does He present Himself before Himself and tell Himself that He has come to do His own will, and call Himself “My God”?

10.  “To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.” (1Ti 1:2; cf., 2 Tim 1:2)

“In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge:” (2Ti 4:1)

The Father and Son are both referenced in these verses. Why do so, if the Father is the Son?

11.  “For there is one God and one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus,” (1Ti 2:5)

How can the man Jesus Christ be the one mediator between God and man, if He is the Father? How does He act as a mediator between man and Himself?

12.  Read the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus to the Father in John 17.

Why did Jesus pray to the Father in John 17 and many other places if He is the Father, since He would be talking to Himself?

13.  “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” (Joh 14:13)

How can the Father be glorified in the Son if there is no distinction between them?

14.  "You heard me say, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.’” (Joh 14:28)

If Jesus is the Father, then why did He say, “the Father is greater than I”?

15.  Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" (Joh 20:17)

If Jesus is the Father, why did He say He was ascending to the Father, and why did He call the Father “My God”?

16.  Jesus answered, "My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.” (Joh 7:16-17)

Why did Jesus say that His teaching was not His own, but that it came from someone else who is the Father, if He were the Father? If He were the Father, wouldn’t His teaching be His own?

17.  Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true. I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me." Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also." (Joh 8:14-19)

Why did Jesus refer to Himself and the Father as two witnesses, if He is the Father?

18.  So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.” (Joh 8:28)

If Jesus were the Father, how could He do nothing on His own, but only do what the Father has taught Him? That would be the same as saying, I the Son can do nothing on my own but only what I the Father have taught myself. However, doesn’t the fact that Jesus said He could do nothing on His own mean that He relies on One other than Himself, namely the Father? And in saying this, didn’t Jesus teach us that the Father is someone other than Himself?

19.  Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me.” (Joh 8:42)

Why does Jesus refer to God who sent Him as someone other than Himself, if He is the Father?

20.  “For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken.” (Joh 12:49)

Since Jesus did not speak on His own, but said only what the Father commanded Him to say, why did He refer to the Father as someone other than Himself that was commanding Him what to say, if He is actually the Father?

21.  “Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.” (Joh 14:10)

Why did Jesus refer to the Father’s authority as one other than His own if He is the Father?

22.  “Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.” (Joh 14:24)

Why did Jesus say that the words He taught did not to belong to Him, but someone other than Himself, who is the Father, if He were the Father? If He were the Father, wouldn’t the words He spoke be His own?

23.  But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. "Look," he said, "I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." (Act 7:55-56)

If Jesus is the Father and the Father is Jesus, then how was Stephen able to see Jesus the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God?

24.  “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.” (Col 1:15)

“For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,” (Col 1:19)

Since God, who is invisible to us here on earth, was pleased to have all of His fullness dwell in the Son, who is the image of the invisible God, why would Scripture refer to God and the Son separately if Jesus is both the Father and the Son?

25.  “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." (Luk 24:49)

Jesus referred to Himself in the first person singular as "I", and to "My Father" in the third person, and then to the gift of the Holy Spirit in the third person as "what My Father promised." Why do so, if Jesus is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost?

26.  “After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.” (Mar 16:19)

If Jesus is the Father, why did He sit down at the right hand of God the Father in heaven?

27.  The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.” (Heb 1:3, cf. Heb 8:1)

If the Son is the Father, then why does it say that He is the radiance of God’s glory, and why again does it say He sat down at the Father’s right hand?

28.  In Romans 8:11, it says, "God raised Jesus from the dead,"

How did God the Father raise Jesus, if Jesus is the Father?

29.  “Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.” (1Co 15:24)

How will Jesus the Son hand the Kingdom over to the Father, if Jesus is the Father? How will He hand the Kingdom over to Himself?

30.  “For he ‘has put everything under his feet.’ Now when it says that ‘everything’ has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ. When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all.” (1Co 15:27-28)

In 1 Cor 15:27 it says that when God puts everything under the feet of Jesus Christ, that does not include God Himself. God is not putting Himself under Jesus' feet. That is very clear. In 1 Cor 15:28, it says that the Son will be made subject to the Father.

Why would Scripture say that God is not under the feet of Jesus and that Jesus will be subject to the Father, if Jesus is the Father, unless they are eternally two distinct divine Persons, with the Father always being the greater than the Son?

31.  “The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John,” (Rev 1:1)

Why did God the Father have to give the revelation to Jesus Christ, if Jesus is the Father?

32.  “John, To the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood,” (Rev 1:4-5)

Why does it refer to Father, Son, and Holy Spirit separately and distinctly if Jesus is all three?

33.  “and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.” (Rev 1:6)

Why does it refer to God as “His God and Father”, if He Himself is the Father?

34.  “To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations— that one 'will rule them with an iron scepter and will dash them to pieces like pottery'—just as I have received authority from my Father.” (Rev 2:26-27)

If Jesus is the Father, why did He need to receive authority from the Father?

35.  “Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God.” (Rev 3:2)

In this passage, the resurrected and ascended, glorified Christ is speaking. Why the need for Him to call the Father “My God” if He is the Father”

36.  “The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels.” (Rev 3:5)

Again, how could Jesus acknowledge anyone before His Father and His Father’s angels in heaven, if He is the Father?

37.  “The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name.” (Rev 3:12)

Why did Jesus always refer to the Father as “My God”, even after he was glorified in heaven, if He is the Father?

38.  “To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne.” (Rev 3:21)

Why would Jesus say He sat down with His Father on His throne, if He is the Father? Can one sit down beside oneself or with oneself?

39.  "The Lamb came and took the scroll from the right hand of the One sitting on the throne." (Rev 5:7)

How does Jesus take the scroll from the hand of the One (the Father) sitting on the throne, if Jesus is the Father? Surely He does not take it from His own hand and hand it to Himself.

40.  “And they sang a new song, saying: "You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.” (Rev 5:9)

Why does the Lamb purchase men for God if He is the Father?

41.  “Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: ‘To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!’"  (Rev 5:13)

Why do they specify that their praise is given to both Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb, if the Lamb is the Father and the Father is the Lamb?

42.  “Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They called to the mountains and the rocks, ‘Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can withstand it?’" (Rev 6:15-17)

Why do these people seek to hide themselves from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb, if the Lamb is the Father?

Why do they refer to “their wrath” (plural) if the Lamb is the Father?

43.  “For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; 'he will lead them to springs of living water.' 'And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.'" (Rev 7:17)

Why refer to the Lamb and God separately here if the Lamb is the Father?

44.  The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever." (Rev 11:15)

Why would they say it has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, if our Lord and His Christ were not two distinct Divine Persons?

45.  Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: "Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.” (Rev 12:10)

Why would it refer to both the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ if there was no distinction between them?

46.  “Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring—those who keep God's commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.” (Rev 12:17)

Why does it speak separately and distinctly about keeping God’s commands and holding fast their testimony of Jesus, if Jesus is the Father?

Two more verses:

47.  “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb” (Rev 22:1)

Why does it say the river of the water of life is flowing from the throne of God and from the Lamb, if the Lamb is the Father and the Father is the Lamb?

48.  “No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him.” (Rev 22:3)

Why does it say the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, if the Lamb is the Father and the Father is the Lamb?

Closing Words

Three modes of God do not talk to each other and sit beside each other. One mode does not refer to another as His God or as someone other than Himself. One mode does not command another mode to do something or give another mode authority. Modalism does not agree with Scripture and is a false teaching.

The Father is God, Jesus is God, and the Holy Spirit is God, according to Scripture. But the Father is not the Son or the Holy Spirit; the Son is not the Father or the Holy Spirit; and the Holy Spirit is not the Father or the Son. They are not three gods. They are three in One, a triune Godhead, God in three Persons, the blessed Trinity.

The Shack is an Attack

I have never read the book called The Shack, but what little I have read about it from some of the reviews shows me it has serious theological problems known as heresies (falsehoods). Rather than try and reproduce another review of my own, I will instead link to some of the reviews that already exist. I recommend the following:

The Shack Heresy

Thirteen Heresies in the Shack

CARM's Take on the Shack

The Shack -- The Missing Art of Evangelical Discernment

I hope you will take a moment to read these articles and consider what they are communicating from the Word of God about that book, which The Shack movie is also based on. Based on what has been presented in these articles, the book is a myth that tickles people's ears. "They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths." (2 Tim 4:4). Let me encourage you to read my article, Not Enduring Sound Doctrine.

This is not just a book, it is an assault on sound doctrine. Now they have come out with The Shack movie based on the book, which is endorsed by many pastors and ministry leaders. In fact, they even have The Shack Outreach Campaign for churches, so they can buy an official copy of The Shack Movie Church Kit and a license to show the movie in church. The Shack Campaign Kit is a 5-Week kit that comes with five sermons, film clips, a planning guide, digital resources like web and social media graphics, PowerPoint templates, bulletin insert templates, and sample invitation tools to invite people to come and see the series at church. Moreover, they even sell a separate study guide for The Shack Campaign, which contains discussion questions and personal applications, so that small groups, families, and individuals can study the things presented in the book and movie. Obviously this goes beyond mere entertainment into the realm of preaching and teaching the concepts of this movie and book in the Church, as if they were biblical truths.

Although these slick marketing resources are presented as an invitation to experience the ultimate truth about love, loss, and forgiveness, that is simply a facade. In reality, this is an attempt to make a deeper penetration into the Body of Christ with this heresy. This is brainwashing propaganda for the masses. The Shack is not based on fact, but rather is an evil attack from the enemy to bring mass deception. Beware! Don't be one of the millions who are being deceived by it. And don't let those you love be deceived by it either. If God has used this this article to open your eyes, then share this article with them, too.

Exposing Heresy

I recently received reproof from a pastor who read my article, called Exposing the JMS Cult. He said that we should not expose false teachers, since it is not a good use of our time, and there are too many cults in the world. Not only was he refusing to assist me in exposing this dangerous cult, by neglecting to warn others, but he was presuming to bring correction and teach me why I myself should not be doing so. He obviously disapproved of what I had done. If one were to listen to him and believe him, they would probably conclude that it was wrong for me to write such an article. However, let’s look at what the Bible says about exposing cults, false teachers, and false prophets.

Contend for the Faith
First of all Jude wrote, "Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God's holy people." (Jud 1:3).

It was initially Jude’s intention of writing to the Church about salvation, but instead he felt compelled to urge them to contend for the faith. He was urging them to strive for the faith, to use earnest efforts to defend and preserve it. He was speaking about contending for the faith against certain ungodly persons, who had crept into the Church unnoticed, and introduced destructive heresies. That was important enough for Jude to change the topic of his letter. Contending for the faith was more necessary at that time than learning more about salvation.

Publicly Reprove Sinning Elders
Secondly, the apostle Paul instructed Timothy, "But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove before everyone, so that the others may take warning." (1 Tim 5:20). This is a very clear instruction from the Holy Spirit to reprove sinning elders before everyone. The reason for such public reproof is so that others may take warning. Other elders will be more careful not to make the same mistake, knowing they will be publicly reproved. And other disciples will be warned not to follow such an elder. If such people are not reproved, or if the reproof is private, rather than public, then others would not be able to take warning.

Expel the Wicked Person
Thirdly, when there is sin in the camp, we are supposed to purge ourselves from evil. Paul said, "God will judge those outside. 'Expel the wicked person from among you.'" (1 Cor 5:13). He was specifically referring to a man in the Corinthian church who was calling himself a brother in Christ, and yet was committing sexual immorality. We are not to tolerate sin in the Church, such as false teaching, but to judge those inside the Church and expel them.

Mute Dogs That Cannot Bark
If all shepherds of the Lord’s flock chose to ignore false teachers, wolves would overrun the church. We would all pay no attention to them and let them devour the sheep, while we look the other way.

Paul warned the Ephesian elders against wolves during his final visit with them saying, "I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock." (Ac 20:29).  The savage wolves would only come after Paul left, since he would never tolerate them like so many people do today. These men are leading people down to hell, and some pastors prefer to stand by idly. That reminds me of dogs that don't bark.

Isaiah prophesied, "Israel's watchmen are blind, they all lack knowledge; they are all mute dogs, they cannot bark; they lie around and dream, they love to sleep." (Is 56:10).

I think one of the reasons the Church has gone astray, and so many Christians have been deceived by cults, is because the shepherds fail to warn the flock. Imagine a shepherd who is supposed to be tending the sheep, and when wolves come into the flock, he leaves them alone, doesn’t chase them off, and doesn’t warn the sheep of their presence. The wolves would take the liberty to carry off sheep any time they were hungry, and eventually the whole flock would be destroyed. What kind of shepherd would that be, who did not fight against the wolves to protect the flock? But that is what shepherds are like when they neglect to warn the flock about false teachers. If people knew that aggressive groups like the Mormons (Latter Day Saints) and the Jehovah’s Witnesses are cults, and that they are teaching falsely, then fewer people would be deceived by them.

Refute Those Who Contradict Sound Doctrine
In Paul's epistle to Titus, he gave the qualifications for an elder, one of which was that an elder must be one who is "holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict." (Tit 1:9). He made it absolutely clear that an elder must refute those who contradict sound doctrine! Any elder or pastor that does not do so is not fit for service.

Deceivers Must Be Silenced
In that same passage, Paul said, "For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain." (Tit 1:10-11). He warned Titus that there are many deceivers, who must be silenced. Any elder or pastor who refuses to silence deceivers is neglecting his duty.

Expose Them
Again, Paul warned, “Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them.” (Eph 5:11). He did not simply say to avoid deeds of darkness, but to also expose them. Therefore, it is a sin to fail to expose sin.

The early church definitely exposed false teachings. One particular example was the first Church Council in Jerusalem, in which they exposed the heresy of Judaizing, or requiring Gentiles to adopt Jewish customs when they turned to Christ (Ac 15).

Paul devoted one of his epistles to exposing such things and said, “I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!”  (Gal 1:6-9)

Rescue Those Staggering to Slaughter
Even godless people can see the harm that destructive cults are doing. For example, there is even an atheist I know, who can see the dangerous nature of the JMS Cult, and he is helping people escape from it. Meanwhile, there is Christian pastors I know who says we should not bother to expose this cult or any cult, for that matter. He says it is “not our job” to do so. I think that it is a judgment against the Church when even the atheist can see the harmful nature of the cults, but the very shepherds of God’s flock refuse to do so.

The Scripture says, “Deliver those who are being taken away to death, And those who are staggering to slaughter, Oh hold them back. If you say, ‘See, we did not know this,’ Does He not consider it who weighs the hearts? And does He not know it who keeps your soul? And will He not render to man according to his work?” (Pro 24:11-12)

Other Scriptures
There are many other Scriptures that instruct us to identify and expose false teachers, rather than ignore them.

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” (1Jn 4:1)

"Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. (Mat 7:15)

If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds.” (2Jn 1:10-11). For this reason, I will not even allow a Jehovah’s Witness or Mormon into my home, when they come to my door.

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them; for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.” (Eph 5:6-13)

But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.” (2Pe 2:1)

“And in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.” (2Pe 2:3)

“These are springs without water and mists driven by a storm, for whom the black darkness has been reserved. For speaking out arrogant words of vanity they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error, promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved.” (2Pe 2:17-19)

“You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness.” (2Pe 3:17)

For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds. (2Co 11:13-15)

“Holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.” (2Ti 3:5)

If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.” (1Ti 6:3-5)

The Lord warns shepherds who do not attend to His sheep, for He says in His Word, "Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of My pasture!" declares the LORD. Therefore thus says the LORD God of Israel concerning the shepherds who are tending My people: "You have scattered My flock and driven them away, and have not attended to them; behold, I am about to attend to you for the evil of your deeds," declares the LORD. (Jer 23:1-2)

“Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from every brother who leads an unruly life and not according to the tradition which you received from us.” (2Th 3:6)

If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of that person and do not associate with him, so that he will be put to shame. Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.” (2Th 3:14-15)

But what I am doing I will continue to do, so that I may cut off opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the matter about which they are boasting.” (2Co 11:12)

"If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. "But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED. "If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. (Mat 18:15-17)

“Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.” (2Ti 4:2)

Putting it All Together
The Scriptures are clear that we must refute, reprove, rebuke, expose, expel, avoid, and keep away from false teachers. They must be silenced. We must beware of such men and guard against them. We must not receive them, welcome them, or be partakers with them. We must rescue those people that they are deceiving, who are being taken away to death, who are staggering to slaughter. In fact, we are to stay away from every brother, who does not live according to the pattern of teaching we have received from the apostles. We must take special note of that person and not associate with him. That includes keeping away from any pastor that disapproves of exposing false teachers and their cults.

I do not spend all my time, or even most of my time, hunting down every single heresy and exposing it. But when I come into contact with it directly, because I encounter someone teaching falsely or encounter a destructive cult that is affecting the flock I care for, or is affecting me, then I address it. I maintain that, according to Scripture, we should certainly contend for the faith and expose false teachers, especially when we have occasion to do so.
