In these days of the Great Deception, when people prefer a reassuring lie rather than the inconvenient truth, this is a collection of articles I have written about the truth found in God's Word, the need for biblical teaching, and sound doctrine.  It includes articles that refute false doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church, the Russian Orthodox Church, the prosperity movement, the eternal security doctrine, Islam, agnosticism, antinomianism, relativism, atheism, humanism, ecumenism, the New Age movement, the Jehovah's Witness, the Mormons, also known as the Latter Day Saints (LDS), as well as the oneness doctrine of Unitarians. This collection of articles also exposes certain other cults and movements based outside the USA. It even exposes the popular, international Hillsong church, as well as certain novels that are popular among Christians.

As the Scriptures say:

“Holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.”  (Tit 1:9)

"I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints." (Jud 1:3b)

“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” (2Ti 2:15)

"In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures." (Jas 1:18)

"Jesus *said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.'" (Joh 14:6)

It is my prayer that these articles will lead you to pray earnestly and seek the Lord's face, as well as search the Scriptures, regarding what you have been taught and have come to believe, so that you will not miss the glories of heaven and wind up in hell for eternity.  “And you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." (Joh 8:32)

How to Find My Latest Content

Did you know that I have over thirty blogs containing over one thousand posts? You can find all that content on Writing for the Master. But the latest content will always be shown on my monthly e-magazine, the Old News That's Still Fresh. That's how I make you aware of new content that I've posted on one of my blogs. And there is typically a new edition published on the first of each month, unless I haven't posted anything new. But in case you've missed any past editions, you can find links to all my editions of the Old News That's Still Fresh at this link.

Why Do People Become Liars?

According to the Holy Bible, the inclination to lie originates deeply within human nature, spiritual influences, and the choices individuals make. Scripture addresses the root causes of dishonesty through several key themes:

1. Spiritual Origin (The Influence of Satan)

The Bible identifies the devil as the ultimate source and archetype of deceit.

The Father of Lies: In John 8:44, Jesus directly confronts religious leaders, saying: "You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies."
The Fall of Man: The first sin recorded in Genesis (Genesis 3) involved a lie told by the serpent, which led humanity into a fallen state characterized by deception and hiding from truth.

2. The Condition of the Human Heart

Scripture teaches that dishonesty is not just an isolated action, but a symptom of a heart turned away from God.

Inherent Sinfulness: Psalm 58:3 states, "Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies." Romans 3:23 states: "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
Internal Corruption: In Jeremiah 17:9, the prophet notes, "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" Because human nature is flawed, people naturally resort to falsehoods to protect themselves or advance their own interests.

3. Motives and Practical Drivers

The Bible highlights several immediate, practical reasons why individuals choose to lie:

Fear and Self-Preservation: People often lie out of fear of consequences, punishment, or rejection. A prominent biblical example is Peter denying that he knew Jesus three times out of fear for his own safety (Matthew 26:69–75).
Greed and Gain: Deception is frequently used to acquire wealth, power, or status unjustly. Proverbs highlights how dishonest gain may seem sweet initially, but ultimately leads to ruin (Proverbs 20:17).
Pride and Covering Up Guilt: People lie to hide mistakes, sins, or flaws to maintain an image of righteousness or competence before others. Proverbs 28:13 notes, "Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy."
Malice and Manipulation: Sometimes people lie intentionally to harm others, spread slander, or manipulate situations to their advantage (Proverbs 6:16–19 lists a "false witness who pours out lies" as something the Lord detests).

Sinful Pleasures and Silencing Conscience: People who indulge in sinful pleasures that they refuse to part with are actually suppressing the truth by their wickedness (Rom 1:18), in order to silence their conscience. They also exchange the truth of God for a lie (Rom 1:25).

4. The Power of What We Love: Desire Over Intellect

It comes down to what you love. The Bible consistently presents truth not merely as an intellectual concept to be understood, but as a moral reality to be embraced and loved. When you look at the specific passages regarding why deception takes root:

Refusing to Love the Truth: Speaking of those who perish because they "refused to love the truth and so be saved," Paul explains that God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie (2 Thessalonians 2:10–11). Here, the fatal flaw isn't just a lack of information; it is an active rejection of love for the truth. When people refuse to love the truth, they become vulnerable to anything that validates their preferences.

Loving Darkness Instead of Light: Jesus declares, "Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil." (John 3:19). People often choose falsehood because the truth exposes things they prefer to keep hidden. Deception acts as a shield for behaviors or worldviews they are unwilling to surrender.

What You Love Dictates What You Believe: The biblical framework suggests that the human will follows the human heart's greatest treasure. If a person loves comfort, approval, or self-autonomy more than reality, they will embrace comforting falsehoods over demanding truths. Conversely, loving the truth means loving God, whereas choosing a lie is ultimately a matter of misplaced affection.

5. The Ultimate Spiritual Divider: Belonging to the Truth

This dynamic is further illuminated by Jesus’ declaration before Pontius Pilate in John 18:37: "Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."

This statement establishes a profound spiritual distinction:

The Source Determines the Response: Jesus does not merely say that people who happen to look for facts find Him; He states that those who belong to the truth—who are "from" or "of" the truth—are the ones who truly listen to Him.

The Root Cause: People become liars and reject the truth ultimately because of their spiritual origin or alignment. Those who are not "of the truth" lack the spiritual inclination to listen to Him or love Him.

The Divider: Scripture presents a clear spiritual binary: those who belong to the Truth listen to the voice of Christ, while those outside of that reality remain vulnerable to deception, choosing darkness because they do not love Him.

What Modern Psychology Confirms

Interestingly, modern psychology and cognitive science have arrived at conclusions that mirror these biblical insights regarding belief and deception:

Motivated Reasoning: Psychologists observe that human reasoning is rarely purely objective. Desires, emotional investments, and identity goals dictate what conclusions people accept. When a hard truth threatens someone's self-image or lifestyle, their brain actively rejects it.

Confirmation Bias and Cognitive Dissonance: People actively seek out information that validates their pre-existing beliefs while ignoring conflicting facts. When faced with a truth that clashes with their desires, they experience psychological distress—leading them to rationalize, self-deceive, or lie to eliminate the friction.

Defense Mechanisms: Denial and repression allow individuals to rewrite internal narratives to protect their egos from guilt or shame, proving that intellect alone does not drive what we believe; what we value and love acts as the ultimate gatekeeper.

Habitual and Pathological Liars

From both a theological and a psychological standpoint, habitual and pathological liars represent an intensified, deeply entrenched version of those exact same root causes.

Here is how that connection plays out:

Theologically (An Enslaved Affection): When the Bible talks about people who love darkness or refuse to love the truth, it describes a hardened spiritual state. In a habitual liar, that condition has progressed from casual self-justification to a lifestyle where deceit functions as a second nature. Just as John 8:44 describes the devil speaking his "native language" of lies because of who he is, a chronic liar has so fully aligned with falsehood that lying becomes their automatic default response to reality.

Psychologically (Compulsive Defense Mechanisms): Clinical psychology views pathological or compulsive lying as an extreme coping mechanism. While an occasional lie is usually meant to dodge a specific, temporary consequence (like fear or embarrassment), a pathological liar's entire identity and self-worth are usually wrapped up in a fragile ego. Their brain automates the fabrication of stories because facing unvarnished reality would cause a catastrophic collapse of the self-image they are trying to protect.

In short, they aren't dealing with a fundamentally different set of issues; rather, the underlying fears, pride, and misplaced affections have taken over the steering wheel completely.

Conclusion: The Ultimate Safeguard

Since Jesus declared, "I am the way and the truth and the life" (John 14:6), the remedy for deception shifts from mere fact-checking to relational devotion.

Knowing and loving Christ with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength serves as the ultimate safeguard against falsehood. When the greatest affection of your heart is anchored in an unchanging God, lesser desires like fear, pride, and convenience lose their power. A heart fully anchored in the source of truth has no appetite for the darkness of deceit.

Do You Want to Know Him?
If you want to know Jesus personally, you can. It all begins when you repent and believe in Jesus.  Do you know what God's Word, the Bible says?

“Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.’” (Mar 1:14b-15).  He preached that we must repent and believe.

Please see my explanation of this in my post called "Do You Want to Know Jesus?"
